The Mara Group which operates the factory on Monday, october 7 launched the manufacturing plant in kigali, Rwanda and was presided over by President Kagame. The smartphone which is dupped the Maraphone,is the first high specification, affordable smartphone manufactured in Africa. During the launch, President Kagame said that the smartphones which are “Made in Rwanda” had already rolled off the assembly line. He hailed the plant as another milestone in the Journey to becoming a high tech industry.
According to the Company, the Maraphone will produce high quality and affordable smartphones which will serve the African population and also aims at exporting to other continents. This joins the list of growing high quality products that are made locally. Manufacturing smartphones is not something easy as it involves putting together many components.
President Kagame acknowledged how smartphone is no longer a luxury item and is now becoming a necessity of everyday life. According to the Rwandan Government report, the percentage of its citizens using smartphones is low and hence the need to put more devices within the reach of the population.
